1) Visual check before sharpening for deep nicks.
2) Visual check after sharpening that the entire blade was sharpened.
3) Smoothness check that there are no rough spots.
4) Skate Gauge check that both edges of the blade are equal.

½ inch standard for most hockey players.
A good median between speed and control.
5/8 inch is not as deep of a cut as ½ inch. Better for bigger players that don’t want to cut into the ice that deep therefore giving more speed. However, you will not have as deep of an edge for quick stopping and tight turns.
3/8 inch is a deeper cut than a ½ inch. This is better for smaller players that are looking for quick stops and turns. This hollow will cause a decrease in speed since your skates will be digging deeper into the ice.
